Hidden Value: What 20 Pallets from a Danish Factory Taught Me About Industrial Recycling

A while ago, I collected around 20 pallets of industrial automation equipment from a large Danish manufacturing company.

Walking through the warehouse felt a bit like a treasure hunt.

There were PLCs, HMI panels, power supplies, sensors, I/O modules, industrial networking equipment and hundreds of other automation components waiting to be sorted.

Some items were brand new.

Some had only seen light use.

And, of course, there was also plenty of scrap. Old cables, damaged components and obsolete equipment that had reached the end of its useful life. That's simply part of the process.

Why Does This Equipment Become Surplus?

Large manufacturers regularly upgrade production lines, modernize equipment or close entire facilities.

When that happens, thousands of industrial components suddenly become surplus.

The obvious question is:

Why don't they simply sell everything themselves?

The answer is actually quite simple.

Sorting, identifying, testing, photographing and listing thousands of individual components takes an enormous amount of time and resources. For a manufacturing company, that is rarely the best use of their engineers, technicians or warehouse staff.

Their business is manufacturing products.

My business is finding value in what they no longer need.

More Than Just Used Parts

Among those 20 pallets were hundreds of perfectly usable industrial components.

A Siemens PLC that could keep another production line running.

An HMI panel that could replace a failed operator interface instead of forcing an expensive machine upgrade.

A power supply that could prevent hours of costly downtime.

These components are often removed not because they have failed, but because an entire production line has been upgraded or replaced.

That is an important difference.

Industrial Recycling Makes Sense

When people hear the word "recycling," they often think about paper, plastic or glass.

Industrial recycling is different.

Sometimes the most sustainable solution isn't melting materials down or breaking equipment apart.

Sometimes it is simply giving an existing component a second life.

Every industrial component that can continue operating for another 5, 10 or even 15 years reduces unnecessary waste and helps companies make better use of the resources already invested in manufacturing that product.

For many businesses, purchasing a quality surplus component is also significantly more cost-effective than replacing an entire system.

Not Every Box Contains Treasure

I'll be honest.

Not everything on those 20 pallets was valuable.

Some boxes went straight to recycling.

Others contained components that are no longer relevant to today's industry.

There was plenty of dust, countless part numbers to identify, and a few moments where I wondered what on earth I had just picked up.

That's part of buying industrial surplus.

You never know exactly what you'll discover until you start opening the boxes.

Giving Industrial Components a New Home

Today, many of the components from those pallets have found their way to companies around the world.

Instead of collecting dust or being discarded, they are helping keep production lines running.

That is one of the reasons I started KLJ Trading.

There is still an incredible amount of valuable industrial automation equipment sitting in warehouses across Europe.
