How We Test and Inspect Used Industrial Automation Components

Buying used industrial automation components should never feel like taking a gamble. At KLJ Trading, our goal is simple: provide honest descriptions, realistic expectations, and quality products that help keep your machines running.

Every shipment of used equipment is different, but our inspection process follows the same principles.

Step 1 – Initial Visual Inspection

When a new batch of products arrives, each component is visually inspected before it is listed.

During this process we look for:

  • Physical damage
  • Broken connectors
  • Missing covers or terminal blocks
  • Corrosion or water damage
  • Burn marks or overheating
  • Excessive dirt or contamination
  • Signs of previous repairs or modifications

Products with obvious defects are either discarded, sold strictly for spare parts, or clearly described as needing repair.

Step 2 – Cleaning

Many components come directly from production facilities and have been operating for years.

Before photography and testing, components are cleaned to remove dust, grease and industrial residue whenever possible. While cosmetic wear is expected on used equipment, we want every product to be presented accurately.

Step 3 – Functional Testing

Whenever practical, products are function tested.

The level of testing depends on the type of equipment and the available test equipment.

Examples include:

  • Powering up HMIs and operator panels
  • Boot testing PLCs
  • Verifying displays and keypads
  • Testing communication ports when possible
  • Checking indicator LEDs
  • Confirming basic startup functionality

Some products require complete industrial production lines or specialised equipment to perform full operational testing. In those cases we perform the highest level of verification that is realistically possible.

Step 4 – Identification

Correct identification is critical.

Every product is checked for:

  • Manufacturer
  • Model number
  • Part number
  • Hardware version
  • Firmware version (when available)
  • Serial number

This ensures customers receive exactly the component they expect.

Step 5 – Photography

We photograph the actual item whenever possible.

The photos are intended to show the real condition of the product, including any cosmetic wear or labels that may be important for identifying compatibility.

Step 6 – Honest Product Descriptions

We believe accurate descriptions create long-term customer relationships.

If we have tested a product, we say so.

If a product has only been visually inspected, we say that.

If there are cosmetic marks, missing accessories or other imperfections, they are clearly described in the listing.

Used Does Not Mean Unreliable

Industrial automation equipment is often designed to operate reliably for decades.

Many PLCs, HMIs, drives and industrial controllers are removed during factory upgrades—not because they have failed, but because entire production systems are being modernised.

These components often have many years of useful life remaining.
